Our campaign to end Child labor in Dang (Bonded labour is the last form of slavery in Nepal)

Our partner organization in Dang, Help Society-Nepal, along with local organizations from Tharu communities conducted a weeklong campaign against illegal child labour. They worked closely with the local community through:

Building Awareness
Community meetings, using local radio stations to get the message out, advertisements in local newspapers, public rallies in the each communities and spent a week on the main road leading out of Dang checking vehicles to ensure no girls were being trafficked.

Collective action
Besides meeting with Tharu communities, they held a meeting to discuss how the wider community could be more effective in preventing child labour with local government officials, civic organizations, reporters, radio presenters, political parties and Tharu girls who had been in bonded labour.

Drama
Tharu girls who had been in bonded labour presented an insightful program about their experiences and how that impacted their families and villages. Later the Assistant Chief District Officer reiterated his and the local administration’s commitment to preventing Tharu girls entering into bonded labour and how he was impressed with the Tharu girls and local civic groups initiatives to end this system.
