International Symposium on Multilingualism and Multilingual Education in China, Nov 28-30, 2014

Report
This symposium enabled me to broaden my understand of the context of Multilingual Education (MLE) in China, Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong. It was also an opportunity to share LDC-Nepal experiences and develop networks with academics from the international community.

Most of the 40+ participants were involved in research and 24 presented papers. I was able to meet Dr. Kirk Person, Dr. Doerthe Schilken and Heidi Cobbey all from SIL International. Dr. Person (Thailand) and Dr. Schilken (China) presented papers on the Asia MLE working group, recent language-in-education policy development and developing preschool and primary curriculum for MTB MLE programs in China.

As a MLE practitioner my paper give an overview of MLE policies in Nepal, implementation and progresses in Nepal with a special focus on our experiences with the Tharu and Limbu language speaking communities. I received encouraging feedback from other participants through their comments and questions. My paper was able to create awareness with the participants about MLE issues faced by NGOs in Nepal.

I continue to receive requests the Limbu and Tharu communities to continue our project activities and adult transitional literacy that begins in the mother tongue and transitions to Nepali, MLE activities in primary schools and livelihood activities for parents.

I would like to thank Wycliffe Germany, individual donors and encouragement and their financial support to enable me to participate in this symposium.
